American food has been known for some of its amazing flavors like classic barbecue and lavish Thanksgiving dinners. However, sometimes there are a few staples of American food that might seem a bit weird to outsiders. A user on a popular internet forum asked: “Non-Americans: What American food do you just think is weird?” Here are the top responses.
One foodie shared: “While I studied abroad in Australia, I got stared at by classmates who couldn't believe I ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I also stayed in a hostel, and me and another American managed to find some refried beans and made some bean burritos. All the Australians in the hostel just watched us eat them and couldn't believe we were eating "dog food wraps."
Cheese Flavored Foods
One foodie shared: “My husband is from Pakistan. He is very confused by cheese-flavored things like chips or crackers. He says, "I think 3 cheeses would be enough.””
One foodie shared: "Despite the fact that all the bread tastes slightly sweet, actually most foods taste sweet. Over in Scotland, things are more salty. Oh and eggs are being offered with nearly every breakfast item, even the sweet items.”
Another foodie agreed sharing: “People say this all the time. But the truth is, we don't even realize our bread is sweet because most of us have never had anything else. In fact, I'd really like to try your "unsweet" bread to see the difference.”
One foodie shared: “I like Ranch on potato products, maybe sometimes on burgers. It's good on chicken as well, and in dips for chips (crisps). Okay, maybe you're right.
Another foodie agreed, sharing, “But only if it's "good ranch". My sister and I judge restaurants on their quality of ranch dressing.”
Pickles on Burgers
One foodie shared: “South African here. I have never heard of most of the food talked about by other people in this thread. I came here thinking pickles on burgers were pretty weird. I was not expecting to read up on such odd food that you Americans have.
Other foodies agreed, sharing: “I love pickles, just not on my burger.
My favorite burger joint does not put pickles on their burgers, but they give you an awesome home-made pickle spear on your plate.”
Everything on Bread
One foodie shared: "My girlfriend is from Southeast Asia, and when we first got together, she told me she doesn't like bread. I didn't think of it as a big deal at the time, but after three years together, I've noticed that we serve EVERYTHING on bread. It's a trip how often we check out the menu at a place and every single item on their menu is a sandwich, a burger, or toast.”
Biscuits and Gravy
One foodie shared: “I can't believe I'm this far down without somebody complaining about biscuits and gravy. My wife's ex (English) and my stepdad (Canadian) were very confused by it.
But then, I make gravy with enough sausage, hardboiled eggs, and bacon that you can slice it and put it on a sandwich.”
One commenter added: "The first time I tried American root beer I thought the drink was contaminated with cleaning chemicals."
Chicken With Waffles
One foodie shared: "I just find chicken with waffles a weird combo, and some people put syrup on it too."
Some people seem to disagree. One foodie chimed in: "I used to also till I tried it. It's delicious; spicy fried chicken with waffles and syrup is a great meal."
