If you’ve ever worked in the restaurant industry, there’s no doubt that you’ve seen or heard things that others haven’t. It can be a crazy world and industry to work in, where you are dealing with the public all the time. A user on a popular social media platform recently asked the question, “Restaurant workers, what’s the worst way you’ve seen someone eat authentic food that they are clearly unfamiliar with?” - and the internet posters have some experiences and thoughts.
Here are the top responses. They’re sure to bring a smile to your face.
Tamales

This poster is probably still laughing: “I grew up in Mexico and moved to a Minneapolis suburb when I was 20. In art school in Minneapolis I made best friends with a guy that was 10 years older than me from a podunk town in Iowa. At the time there weren't many Hispanics around the area where I live in and therefore no real Mexican restaurants, only "Mexican*" restaurants. I decided one day that I really wanted tamales, so I asked my mom for the recipe and made a big batch to share with my Minnesotan friends so they could try real Mexican food. I gave half a dozen to my Iowan buddy.
The next time I saw him he said he really liked them but that it was really hard to eat "the tortilla wraps" so after finishing the first one he just gave up and that he felt bad for just picking the filling out and tossing the wraps.
I miss that guy.”
Wasabi
This restaurant worker has seen some things: “People new to wasabi always treat it like guacamole and spread it on their food. Always the first and last time they make that mistake.”
Sushi
This poster likes to play tricks, too: “I have asked for ketchup at French restaurants. The classier they are the more I enjoy asking for it.
I've been known to dip my sushi in ketchup to embarrass my wife.”
Edamame
This poster proved that no one knows how to eat them: “A worker ordered edemame and had a bowl for the beans and another for the bean shells. A new guy asked if he could try some they said yeah, but he took the empty chewed up shells and started eating them like that. This was during covid too.”
Indian Food
They’re not a restaurant worker, but still see this all the time: “not a restaurant worker but it always makes me giggle when i’m at an indian restaurant and every person at the table orders a separate “entrée.” most of the time indian food is meant to be enjoyed family style so seeing everyone at a table of 6 get a giant bowl of curry and matching side of white rice is hilarious to me lol”
Chinese
This poster might win the award: “My auntie tried to eat a rolled up hot towel at a Chinese restaurant.”
Tacos
One commenter shared: "A year ago, a guy from Hawaii got tacos. I picked up the shell in one hand and ate the filling using a fork."
Another user chimed in: "That sounds like the opposite of the people commenting that they ate the wrapper of the tamale."
