Raise your hand if you were forced to eat certain foods as a kid that you despised. More than likely, everyone in a room would have their hand raised! Recently the question, “Which food did you hate as a kid that you now love?” was posted on Reddit and the now adults come out swinging. There are sure to be a few foods on this list that strike a chord with you as well.
Here are some of the top responses from the Reddit thread. (and you’ll notice a bit of a trend that as adults, they actually like some of the foods that they didn’t like when they were younger!)
Fish

This poster was over it as a kid, but actually grew to like it: “As a kid, I HATED fish of all sorts. It didn’t matter the preparation, as soon as I smelled anything fishlike, I’d start dry heaving. This dread came from a mother who overcooked it all and bullied me into eating it.
Fortunately, as an adult I found that fish was not only good for me, but that it tasted good as well. Some of my favorite dishes are of the raw variety (sushi, poké) but I also love fried fish and pickled (ceviche for the win!). I couldn’t imagine not eating it now.”
Applesauce
The tables turned as they aged: “Applesauce. I hated the smell and texture at first bite. But when I grew up and needed soft food for my wisdom teeth removal, I actually took the time to try it. I realized that I enjoyed the taste. It's like an easy way to eat apples without the biting and getting it all over your teeth.”
Canned Vegetables
This was a big no-no for this foodie: “Vegetables. My mom only cooked from cans.
And her idea of a good salad was iceberg lettuce and chopped up tomatoes.
When I left home I learned to enjoy fresh vegetables and cook them all kinds of ways. Also make delicious salads with all kinds of greens and other veggies.”
Onions
To be fair, this user didn’t have real ones until later in life: “Onions. To be fair, my only real experience with onions as a kid were those gross little dehydrated onion bits they put on burgers. Had purple onions on salad as an adult and loved them.”
Pork and Shrimp
They used to like them, but not now: “I already ate most foods. But now I like mustard, onions, mushrooms, all kinds of border line stuff. I’ll eat dirt at this point. However I can’t stand pork & shrimp which I used to eat. Both feel disgusting & make my stomach unwell.”
Meat on the bone
This poster lets their sniffer be their guide: “Meat on the bone. Totally grossed me out. Cheese smelled weird. Bread smelled weird.”
Pasta
Turns out mom was in the wrong: “As a kid, I hated pasta. Turns out my mom just didn't know how to cook it. It was always underdone.”
Brussels Sprouts
One user shared: "This is a good one! I think I just never had them prepared in a good way. My mom always bought the steamed ones you microwaved in the bag and so I thought I hated them. Turns out they are actually great other ways!"
