In the age of social media, viral recipes have taken the culinary world by storm. It seems like everyone is eager to recreate their favorite dishes, regardless of where they live. This global culinary phenomenon has led to some surprising discoveries for people from different countries, who are often amazed to see their traditional dishes gaining widespread popularity around the world.
Recently, a user on a popular internet forum sparked a thought-provoking discussion by asking fellow food enthusiasts about the food from their country that surprised them the most with its global impact.
Stroopwafels

One foodie shared: “Stroopwafels have gotten very popular internationally. Personally they're not my favorite. We have a lot of different types of cookies though, it would be nice if some others got more attention.”
Suggested alternative cookies included from users were: “bokkenpootjes, kletskoppen, and gevulde koek” to try instead.
Adobo
One Filipino user shares: “Almost every foreigner I know likes this. Youtubers tend to make videos making these to get clicks and views. Its not bad, but its too simple.”
They instead suggest an alternative dish: “ If theres a Filipino dish I want people to know about, its Kare-Kare. Its beef/oxtail stew with rich peanut sauce and vegetables, and you serve it over hot rice and a bit of shrimp paste.”
Bœuf bourguignon
A French user shared: “As a french person, people would refer a lot to Bœuf bourguignon. I love it, do not get me wrong, especially with the red wine flavour.”
They instead suggested: “But I would love to see the Pot-au-feu having more recognition. That’s a deep flavoured dish with beef cheek meat, beef bones full of narrow, carrot, potatoes, parsnip, onions and so much other vegetables that simmer for hours. Absolutely beautiful. The best thing is that it makes two dishes since you serve the broth with angel hair pasta the next day cooked in it.”
Poutine
Although from Canada, many Canadians hesitated to call it a global favorite with one user sharing: “Our national dish is probably poutine, but the Canadian dish that has had the most global impact has to be Hawaiian pizza.”
One user instead suggested a classic roast dinner instead: “Honestly, just classic roast dinners i would say are the most typical: chicken, turkey, beef, pork, ham. Classic that people make for various holidays, with potatoes, gravy and various veg.”
Bibimbap and KBBQ
One user from Korea shared: “Korean- bibimbap and kbbq. Don’t get me wrong it tastes good but kbbq is just grilling meat. And bibimbap is what I used to eat as a kid when my mom had too much veggie banchans left and would just add everything to rice and gochujang. I never eat it.”
They instead suggested: “Much better options are 설렁탕(ox bones soup), 돼지국밥 (pork bone stew), or even 순대국 (blood sausage stew). Also, all the foods we eat for ancestral rites is so good.”
Pho
One foodie from Vietnam shared: “Pho. It’s good, but there are so many other Vietnamese dishes that have an amazing kick of flavor and spice.”
They instead suggested: “For example, Bun Bo Hue (spicy beef noodle soup) is one of my favorites… so much flavor and spice that it beats pho by far, in my opinion!”
Pad Thai
One user shared: "I lived in Thailand for awhile. I'm baffled daily that pad thai is the quintessential Thai food, at least in America.
There are so many unrepresented Thai dishes that it's hard to choose, but there are several that would better represent Thai cuisine. Thom Saap is one of my favorite soups in the world. Fragrant and rich. I love it dearly."
