When we visit new countries, we always try the local specialties. But when Americans think of their own food, they may have a very different list than what visitors expect. A user on a popular internet forum asked, "Non-Americans, what is the best 'American' food?" This sparked a lively debate about which American dish is the best. Here are the top responses.
One foodie shared: “Cajun food. Definitely the most unique American food.”
Another foodie traveler agreed, sharing: “If you want to see someone’s soul leave their body in the best way possible, find a southeast Asian or Filipino friend and take them out for Cajun food.
There’s an entire community of Vietnamese people in Houston who took Redbone/Cajun food to extremes. Ever seen a buffet with an 8-foot high tower of crawfish? Turns out the climate along that Texas/Louisiana part of the Gulf is very similar to Vietnam with a lot of the same seafood.”
One foodie commented: “Pulled pork. Luckily, a couple places make it here too (pulled pork burger, pizza, pulled pork filled crepes with coleslaw).”
Even American foodies agreed sharing: “Pulled pork crepes with coleslaw sound awesome. I live in the US and I’ve never seen these.”
One foodie said: “Curly fries👌. I recently came across Carl’s jr for the first time in Istanbul airport and the curly fries were just the best.”
Another foodie agreed sharing: “the fun thing about curly fries is that they are basically the same everywhere. I'm pretty sure it's one company supplying all the different fast food places.”
American Thanksgiving Dinner
One foodie shared: “I'm from Mexico and we get spoiled with our traditional cuisine but I found the Thanksgiving dinner experience in the US incredible. Love everything, the turkey (dark meat 🙂 ), cranberry sauce, the stuffing (oh the stuffing), mashed potatoes, salads, and the delicious pays that follow for dessert. That whole combination, plus the red wine and good company is an incredible experience hard to match.”
American Breakfast Food
While Americans are known for many things, a shocking choice that a lot of people chose was the traditional American breakfast. One foodie shared: “I love American breakfast food. Honestly I think they have breakfast down pat.”
According to many non-Americans, they felt that the way Americans smoke their food, was a huge win! One foodie shared: “Anything smoked: brisket, pork shoulder, chicken, turkey. I've even had smoked burgers. If seasoned well you don't even need BBQ sauce and it is so tender and juicy.”
One foodie commented: “This is probably a recipe for disaster but I'm British and growing up visiting Florida I would love eating raw cookie dough from the refrigerator section.”
Another agreed sharing: “Cookie dough is so good that, given the option between not eating it, or getting food poisoning, nearly everyone will pick the cookie dough.
It’s one of the few foods in the country where everyone knows the risk of food poisoning, and everyone makes the conscious, willing, and eager decision to not care.”
American Breakfast Food
One traveler shared: "Honestly I think they have breakfast down pat. But what I really appreciate are PIZZA ROLLS. God bless the Americans for pizza rolls."
One foodie shared: "Given the level of Mexican food in Europe generally, Tex-Mex is insane compared to what we get over here."
Other commenter chimed in: "I went to Mexican restaurant in Europe and was like what was that."
