Airplanes can make long journeys more tolerable, even if it means sitting for hours in a cramped seat next to strangers.
On lengthier flights, you can usually buy an in-flight meal to avoid the rush of airport food, especially if you have a flight lasting six or more hours with no other dining options.
Vegans have often struggled to find suitable airport food, which can leave them hungry during flights.
In-Flight Food Fail
For Juanita Headley, her lackluster vegan meal during her six-hour flight was hardly a meal at all.
In an article published by the New York Post, Headley shared the story of her less-than-pleasurable experience aboard a popular airline after claiming she was only given nuts and fruit for the entire 4,500-mile-long flight.
The article states, “She was only given pineapple pieces, a tangerine and a handful of nuts as the airline’s in-flight meal. For the second service, she said she was presented with a cold vegan wrap, a banana, and an additional bowl of nuts.”
She told the JamPress: “Thank God I don’t have a nut allergy or I would have been on fruit rations.”
In an era when vegan and dairy-free diets are more popular, it is totally unacceptable that an airline isn’t better prepared for such a long flight. In the article, Headley suggests that if the vegetarian meal was vegan, this could make things “very simple for crew and passengers.”
She shared photos of her disappointing meal online, which left her fellow vegan tribe fuming as well.
The Masses Weigh In
“Sorry you’ve had this experience, I’ve had similar but in 2014 and ever since I’ve always carried food just in case,” another added, with someone else describing the entire meal as an “afterthought.”
In 2023 that’s simply outrageous,” one shocked user wrote.
Others however felt that she should have been more prepared for her flight, and blamed her for not considering that the airline might not be able to accommodate her request.
“I reckon you’ll survive six hours,” they snarked.
The comments on the article were split, with some in agreement with Headley that she should have been better accommodated for. However, others felt that perhaps she might share some of the blame.
One user shared: “Doesn’t sound like she had pre-ordered a vegan meal when she booked her ticket…”
Another user sided with the airline stating: “I mean the airlines just provide the basics, there's no chance they will expand their menu options to be as it was in the past, decent meals.”
As an avid vegan traveler, if an airline promises to provide a vegan-friendly meal and the airline is notified ahead of time, there is no reason for such lackluster service.
That being said, as a vegan, I also know that a lot of places won’t be able to accommodate my special diet and so I pack snacks or extra food with me just in case they can’t.
