When it comes to food, sometimes it’s better not to ask how it is prepared. From dishes like chicken nuggets to imitation crab, some things are better left a mystery. A user on a popular social media platform once asked: “What foods seem completely fine until you realize how it's actually made?” sparking a lively debate.
Here are the top responses.
Imitation Crab

One foodie shared: “Imitation crab. It’s fish paste with eggs, a bunch of additives and colorings. Which makes sense. The weird part is watching the two colors of extruded paste get stretched out and wrapped around each other, like fish taffy.” Many felt that imitation crab were the hot dogs of the sea, and many were on the fence about whether they loved or hated it.
Apple Salad
From pasta salads to fruit salads, many felt that these were among the best meals they had growing up. However, it didn’t take long before many found that now that they knew what it entails, they were a little less appetizing. One user shared: “When I was growing up my grandma used to make this amazing apple salad dessert thing. I loved it growing up. One year I wanted to make it for myself as an adult and I asked her the recipe. Turns out it was just apples, mayo and sugar.”
Puff Pastry
While the puff pastry itself wasn’t offputting, in fact many found it quite delicious, after having to make it from scratch, most couldn’t stand even the sight of it anymore.
One user shared: “As a baker, puff pastry.
Not because it's gross or something, it's just a long, involved process that can break you if you let it.”
Another user agreed sharing: “I've made it once. Took hours because if it started to warm up I would refrigerate it again. Now I just buy it. The difference between homemade and raw store bought is negligible with everything I tend to add to it/around it. Not worth the 3ish hours it took.”
Shark Fin Soup
Many users shared that they did enjoy the soup, and felt that it was an elegant dish worth trying, until they realized how they got it. Many agreed that the shark fin didn’t add much if any flavor, and was more of a status symbol than a tasty dish.
One foodie shared: “A lot of people enjoy Shark Fin Soup and maybe some don’t realize what the fisherman do to get the fins. Look up video if you want but they bring the shark on board, cut off all the fins, and chuck it back still alive to writhe and float and suffer.”
Another user added: “Even worse, is that it offers 0 flavor on its own. The flavor of shark fin soup is from whatever else they add to it. Shark fin on its own is tasteless.”
Foie Gras
One user commented: "I don't understand how anyone who knows how it's made can justify eating it." Another foodie chimed in: "It is indeed very tasty, I will however never order it myself, I eat it if someone already ordered it without my knowledge."
