Who doesn't love a cheesy, buttery breadstick? This Cheese Breadsticks recipe is a total crowd-pleaser. Here's why this recipe is the best:
- Easy to Make: The recipe uses simple, readily available ingredients, and the steps are easy to follow.
- Cheesy Goodness: We use Gruyere cheese for its rich, nutty flavor, which sets these breadsticks apart from the rest.
- Buttery and Flaky: The combination of butter and cheese in the dough creates a wonderfully flaky texture that's simply irresistible.
- Great for Everything: These breadsticks are the perfect party appetizer, snack, or accompaniment to your favorite soup or salad.
Key Ingredients
- Gruyere Cheese – The star of our recipe, Gruyere cheese, adds a rich, nutty flavor and a wonderfully gooey texture. You can also try this recipe with Parmesan cheese for a delicious alternative.
- Butter – We use butter at room temperature to ensure that it mixes easily with the other ingredients, and to give our breadsticks a tender, flaky texture.
Substitutions and Variations
Here are a few of our favorite variations and substitutions to make this recipe your own:
- Cheese: While we love the nutty flavor of Gruyere, feel free to experiment with other cheese. Sharp cheddar, mozzarella, or even a sprinkle of parmesan would work great in this recipe.
- Spices: We kept this recipe simple with just a pinch of salt, but feel free to play around with different spices. Garlic powder, paprika, or even some dried herbs would take these breadsticks to the next level.
- Seeds: We love the added crunch and flavor that sesame seeds provide, but you could also sprinkle the breadsticks with poppy seeds, or everything bagel seasoning.

Frequently Asked Questions
We recommend using Gruyere cheese for this recipe. It has a rich, nutty flavor and melts beautifully, giving your breadsticks a deliciously cheesy and savory flavor.
While you can use pre-shredded cheese, we highly recommend shredder the cheese yourself. Pre-shredded cheese often contains anti-caking agents that can affect the texture and melting properties of the cheese in your breadsticks.
Chilling the dough helps the breadsticks maintain their shape and texture while baking. It also allows the flavors to meld together, resulting in a more delicious end product.
Cheese breadsticks can be kept in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. You can also freeze them for up to 2 months. Just make sure to reheat them in the oven to restore their crispiness.
