Visiting Great Wolf Lodge on Christmas has become our annual family tradition. Well, it’s only been a second year since we discovered that place, but we totally love it. The first Great Wolf Lodge that we visited was in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. But after we moved to Indiana, the closest resort to our home now is Great Wolf Lodge Sandusky Ohio.
Usually, we take 3 days trip. And this time is sufficient to get the most out of the water park.
So, let’s get started on my review:)
Parking: There were plenty of parking spots. I don’t know how busy the place gets during other seasons, but on Christmas Eve and 2 days after, we didn’t have any problems with finding a good parking spot.
Check-In: Check- in process at Great Wolf Lodge usually starts at 4 pm. It was suitable for us, since we like to drive during our daughter’s nap time and it takes about 3 hours for us to drive from Indiana to Sandusky.
When we arrived, there was a little wait line, but it moved relatively quickly. The staff was very friendly. While my husband was taking care of the registration process, me and our daughter had a chance to look around.
At check-in, we also make sure that the room we’re getting is not facing a highway or dumpster, or not located on the ground flour.
Room: When we received our room keys, I quickly checked it for cleanness. It was nice and clean, with fresh towels and some extra little things for kids like floss and nose wipes.
We usually like to take a family suit with 2 queen size beds and a fireplace. What’s cool is that the fireplace was there not just for pretty image, it actually produced heat and created that special cozy atmosphere in the evening.
We quickly changed to our swim suits and headed to the water park. Melania was too excited. Water attractions are her thing.
Water Park: The water park in Great Wolf Lodge Sandusky Ohio is slightly smaller than the one in Wisconsin Dells. It didn’t have a pool with the waves. But I think for smaller kids, it’s not really an issue. There are still a plenty of other things to do.
This pool is the best for younger kids. It’s shallow and has a small slide.
The water park has a couple of large slides. We haven’t used them, but there was always a little line. From the picture below, in the top right corner, you can see where the line starts.
The water park facility was clean. The water is quite chlorinated too. As you can imagine, this is a necessary measure to kill the bacteria.
I’ve read some reviews that people complained about getting sick or getting an ear infection after visiting Great Wolf Lodge. I think, this issue is possible not only in this particular water park, but in all other public pools too. As much as the staff tries to clean everything, people still touch plastic chairs, doorknobs and other objects where the bacteria is more likely to stay. Just make sure to wash your and your kids hands right after attending a water park, or consider taking a shower.
Dining: Great Wolf Lodge Sandusky Ohio has a couple of restaurants on the site and a coffee shop. However, this year, we didn’t dine there, since we wanted to explore other options in town. If you decide to dine-out either, Sandusky has plenty of bars and restaurants for any budget and taste.
Entertainment: There are plenty of activities for kids of all ages: story time, wolf walk etc. We haven’t participated yet, but I’m sure it’s fun, because I saw how many kids were taking part in those activities.
Check-out: The check-out at Great Wolf Lodge is at 11 am, which is a little bit too early, especially considering that check-in is at 4 pm. I think, this definitely has to be revised.
Final Thoughts: Overall, we enjoyed our experience at Great Wolf Lodge Sandusky Ohio. It’s a nice place to take your kids during cold winter months. Next year we consider going there again.
