A business class passenger ordered an in-flight vegan meal only to be served a banana.
According to the New York Times, an airline passenger complained about an “insulting” in-flight meal he purchased as a business class passenger.

Vegan Meal Fiasco
As a vegan, I find myself in very similar situations where “vegan meals are provided,” only to find that a vegan option means at best a side salad or picking the meat out of a dish.
Except the passenger found himself with a pair of chopsticks and a single banana to eat as his vegan meal for a seven-hour flight.
The passenger reported his disappointing meal on the air travel forum, saying he had thought it was a pre-breakfast snack — not the entire meal.”
Before takeoff, he confirmed with the flight attendant that he had ordered a vegan meal and that his breakfast was a banana. He writes in outrage, saying, “he thought she meant that breakfast included a banana.”
The passenger stated: “It’s a bit insulting to be served a single banana while others are given a far more substantial and flavorful menu. It seems especially important given the growth in the number of vegans and vegetarians.”
While non-vegans could enjoy anything from a seared tuna and eggplant salad, a single banana is more fitting as a snack than an entire meal.
While his vegan lunch was a “barely seasoned spaghetti,” at least it was a step up from the single banana that he’d gotten.
Others Weigh In
One user commented: “As someone with Celiac Disease, I travel with plenty of snacks because I do not expect airlines to provide me with gluten-free food -- even in First or Business Class.” suggesting that perhaps the traveler should have brought their own food and not relied on the airline at all.
While others commented that they were shocked to get any food on a plane: “It's been a while since I've flown, but I was under the impression that you're lucky if you get any food on a plane anymore.”
Other users suggested that they should have dealt with the problem differently suggesting: “They are many ways to deal with a banana....this passenger needed to explore all options!!!”
Or, suggesting that he should have called the airlines before his flight: “I'm guessing the passenger did not pre-order a vegan meal hours/days ahead of schedule?”
Other vegans in the comments made helpful suggestions that airlines could take to heart suggesting: “I'm a vegan and a simple solution is to serve some universally vegan dishes like a rice pilaf, spaghetti & red sauce, a bean based casserole, or a bean burrito. All of those are vegan and anyone can enjoy them so no food is wasted.”
Many felt that the expectations of the passenger were too high given that it was an airline meal, while others suggested he take action to explore all the other options and get justice.
